KNOW YOUR RHESUS FACTOR
What is the Rhesus Factor? Rhesus Factor is the protein content that can be located on the surface of red blood cells. If your blood cells has this protein content you are RH positive but if your blood cell lack this protein content it means you are RH negative. RH status is defined by the positive or negative part of your blood type such as O+ or A-. During pregnancy problem may occur if the mother and fetus has Incompatible RH factor.
The Rhesus Factor is inherited, meaning it can pass from parent to child through genes, the fetus can inherit RH factor from any of the parents, and if the fetus didn't inherit Rhesus Factor from any of the parents, automatically the fetus is RH negative.
RH incompatibility can be problem when the blood of RH positive fetus get into the blood stream of a RH negative mother, her body will recognize that the RH blood isn't hers and her body will make attempt to distroy it by making anti RH called antibodies, these anti body can cross the placenta and harm the fetus blood cells which can lead to serious problem or even death of the fetus.
How Do Rhesus Antibodies Develop? Rhesus Antibodies Develop when the blood of the RH positive fetus mix-up with the blood of RH negative Mother maybe during labor and birth or through bleeding during pregnancy, Trauma to the abdomen during pregnancy or attempt to manually turn a fetus to be head down for birth.
When do RH antibodies cause problem?: During the first pregnancy of RH negative mother and RH positive fetus, problem don't usually occur, this is because no chance to develop alot of antibodies, but if treatment is not administer during the first pregnancy and the woman later get pregnant again with RH positive fetus, her body can develop more antibodies which put the future fetus at risk.
RH negative woman can also make antibodies after miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, induced abortion. A future RH positive fetus maybe at risk if the RH negative mother get pregnant after any of this event and hasn't received the treatment.
How can RH antibodies affect a fetus? During pregnancy the RH antibodies made in woman body can cross the placenta and attack fetus blood cells which can cause anemia in the fetus, in which the red blood cells are distroyed faster.
Red blood cells carry oxygen to all part of the body, without enough red blood cells the fetus will lack enough oxygen which could lead to the death of the fetus or new born can die from anemia. RH incompatibility can also results to jaundice in newborn. Please like and follow my blog,
